"Like
seeds from interracial relationships/
I draw crowds at the same time I erase kids."
- the Diaz Bros. ft. Matrix & Abutta - Keep Pouring
Lyricist Lounge Vol. 1
"I'll
make you fall off like an interracial relationship."
- Redman & Saukrates - W.K.Y.A.
Lyricist Lounge Vol. 2
The lyrically creative use of metaphors and similes has always been and
will always be some of the criteria for measuring the skills of an emcee.
And, the authenticity or credibility of a comparison made within the
simile or metaphor lies in its ability to reflect reality outside of the
lyrics on a track. Close to two years spanned between the production of
Lyricist Lounge Vol. 1 and Lyricist Lounge Vol. 2. If the two similes
cited above do in fact carry with them a real sense of truth (and they may
not depending on who you ask), they would suggest that society remains
unable to accept interracial relationships and individuals of multiracial
and/or multiethnic descent.
While for the most part
they remain a socio-cultural taboo, interracial relationships are
happening more frequently these days. Additionally, many in this country
are growing up with multiracial and/or multiethnic descent. Pop culture
and mainstream society must confront their inability to understand the
ever-changing distinctions of racial and ethnic identification. When
cultures are being shared between two people or within one person, there
doesn't always exist a dominant culture that is embraced and subordinate
culture that is forgotten. While this issue of cultural dominance and
subordination may occur within a relationship or an individual (seeing
that Western lifestyle trains us to do so), there are those occurrences in
which elements of two (or three or four) cultures become interwoven in way
that every element remains recognized and/or embraced.
Somewhat
related to the two statements made is my response to them which has in it
some of what the two statements shed light on in addition to other
thoughts.
in
constant oppositional position
existing as an appendage of abnormality
roamin my home in bare feet
with hair not lined up, faded, or "neat"
chillin
Naturally
in the name brand shit i got for free
lugz and rawkus
i am Mixed Black caucus
forever
chillin…
building and sustainin positions
between and of consciousness and all that isn't
feelin both sides
i am the anchor of the traditional scale
impaled by the paradox of life
(and)
not weighin enough to be wanted
but, it's
a privileged position
and one of contrition…
"God, forgive me for my tendencies
to despise those eyes, hearts, and minds
of those who ostracize."
put me on
any side and i am unwanted
forever battlin in society's gauntlet of misunderstanding
strugglin to define and find
wounded lines of blood and original landings
now fallen victim to racist dehumanizing reprimandings
to this
day
i am the
colonizer and the colonized
so, what do i do with the hate i feel for myself?
the Spiritual Holistic Wealth of Afrocentricity
leaves me in placidity
confront
the chaos a Mixed Reality
blurred reflections scare me
the street's static definition of position
tear me apart and the heart
the
ignorant blind start to call me anything and everything
in addition to "not Black" inside their heads
dare they say what their thought said
if they did,
i couldn't refuse gettin rabid on they rancid asses
this goes
out to the masses…
pass by me without that perplexed look
my styleless sway, i know, don't leave you shook
(and) i'm not a book you can't read
i once was
a seed
just like you, i need my water to live
so, secede yourself from conventional barriers of perception
conception of me lies outside of them
